Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments analyzing the portrayals of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that explores the representations of females in narratives from popular culture. Alongside working to bring awareness to sexual harassment and assaults on women and other minorities in online spaces she is committed to breaking the stereotypes prevalent in pop culture. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Alongside being a popular public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was fascinated by the gender issue and feminist movements from a very early age. In 2009, when she was still studying at university she started her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to launch a web series that would examine gender-based representations in video games. She ended up being the victim of an online harassment campaign. The attack wasn't enough to deter her. Instead, it increased her importance to being a feminist and a media critique. Her many notable contributions in the field of feminists were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a journalist. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit organization that explores pop culture representations of females.
